The Master of Studies in Law at East London University’s School of Law is an advanced degree designed for graduates and mid-career professionals seeking to enhance their careers with a versatile alternative to the traditional three-year Juris Doctor degree. The MSL degree can be earned in one academic year (August to May) full-time or two to four years in a flexible part-time schedule.

MSL scholars seek to gain foundational and specialized knowledge of laws and legal systems. Law is a pervasive influence on almost all aspects of life across the globe, but higher education often ill-prepares students and professionals for navigating laws and legal dynamics in business and life. The MSL degree addresses this critical knowledge gap.

Also, ELU School of Law admits a limited number of graduate students each year to pursue one year of full-time study leading to the degree of Master of Laws. Admission is generally open only to those committed to a career in teaching law.

No uniform course of study is prescribed for LL.M. candidates—courses are elective, and students are afforded considerable flexibility to tailor their studies to their own interests. Subject to meeting degree requirements, each LL.M. candidate is invited to use the resources of the School of law in whatever program of study will best prepare that individual for a career in research and teaching.

Students enjoy small class sizes, the camaraderie of many international and J.D. students, and a close relationship with the ELU School of Law faculty. While small—the Law School typically enrolls between 22 and 25 LL.M. students each year—the LL.M. program at ELU School of Law is truly global in its reach. Over the past four years, our LL.M. students have come from over 30 different countries.

ELU School of Law has specialized in health and intellectual property law for more than a decade, and its premier health law programs are consistently ranked among the top in the nation. Faculty conduct research on a wide range of health and intellectual property law topics.

Our nationally respected faculty members are committed to helping you achieve your professional goals and move forward in your career. You can count on having the support you need to get the most out of your education.
